European Union, Japan intensifies hydrogen cooperation
The European Commission and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to spur innovation and develop an international hydrogen market, building towards global trade despite both markets potentially competing for hydrogen supply in the future.
The MoC was signed in Tokyo by Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura.
“The EU and Japan will work together for sustainable and affordable production, trade, transport, storage, distribution and use of renewable and low carbon hydrogen. The cooperation will help to establish a rules-based and transparent global hydrogen market without distortions to trade and investment,” the press release said.
Both the EU and Japan are seeking to reach net zero by 2050 and the import of hydrogen is key to both strategies employed by the two.
The MoC also says that the EU and Japan will “at the international level work towards common standards and certification.”
